Try a Walking Meditation
What does it actually feel like to step from one foot to another?
If the idea of sitting or lying down to meditate seems challenging (or sleep-inducing), you might enjoy this mindful guided walking meditation. Rather than walking to get somewhere or for fitness, I guide you through walking much more intentionally and slowly, noticing what it actually feels like to take steps and shift the weight from one foot to the other. You can try this practice by just pacing back on forth in a smaller space, or you can grab headphones/earbuds and go outside.
I think you’ll find that doing a walking meditation is very different from your regular walking around. If you do have trouble walking there are some adaptations that I’ll offer so that you can do that safely and comfortably. And if walking is difficult for you and you find that this just isn’t working or if you can’t walk, you can simply listen and imagine.
I’m a licensed mental health counselor who enjoys sharing mindful meditations and information about mindfulness. Below is a transcript of a meditation I led on this topic, and at the end of the article, you’ll find a link to the meditation video. In this guided meditation, you can stand up and do the walking and while I remain seated and guide you. Let’s get started.
