How mindfulness meditation can help with procrastination

Procrastination. It’s that looming sense of something that needs to be done or should be done that we don’t want to do. We all do it. We wait until the last minute to do things at work or school. We don’t do the things we know would benefit us or make us feel healthy. We try to make ourselves feel better through distraction, but that good feeling quickly turns to misery.

I’m a licensed mental health counselor who enjoys sharing mindful meditations and information about mindfulness. Below is a transcript of a meditation I led on this topic, and at the end of the article, you’ll find a link to the meditation video. In this guided mindfulness meditation, we explore what gets in our way to gain insights that might help us make better decisions about how we use our time. Let’s get started.

Meditation Transcription

I’ll invite you to start by becoming present. When we think about procrastination, our mind immediately goes to something that is due in the future. But before we go there let’s just get comfortable with where we are right this second.

Get that sense of grounding by noticing feet on the floor or whatever part of you is in contact with something that is supporting you.
