It starts with a breath

Whether you are new to mindfulness meditation or have been doing it for a while, the breath is always a good focus — we can pay attention to what the breath feels like as it moves through the body, and what the body feels like as it moves in response. If you haven’t ever tried meditation before, or you think you’re not good at it, this basic guided meditation might be helpful. And if you’ve been doing meditation for a long time, this might be a nice reminder of this basic focus on the breath and the benefits that can bring to us.

I’m a licensed mental health counselor who enjoys sharing mindful meditations and information about mindfulness. Below is a transcript of a meditation I led on this topic, and at the end of the article, you’ll find a link to the meditation video. Let’s get started.

Meditation Transcript

We can get started by settling into a comfortable seated position that allows us to be upright, so it’s almost like there’s a string pulling us up, but we’re not overly rigid, so we’re both relaxed and alert at the same time. It’s helpful to have both feet on the floor if we’re sitting for this meditation, and that gives us a sense of the ground beneath our feet.
